Water resource

Water management: innovation and technology for efficient water use

Thanks to innovative management, including the allocation of consumption targets to each production unit and targeted investments, Sofidel has significantly reduced water consumption in production processes over the years, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable water management. With a lower average use than industry benchmarks, we demonstrate a real commitment to the conservation of natural resources and environmental protection.

For a responsible use of water

Sofidel adopts advanced solutions to optimise the use of water resources and minimise the impact of production processes. Through innovative systems and targeted investments, we strive to achieve more efficient and responsible water management.

Production process innovation

Thanks to the optimisation of production cycles and efficient plant design, Sofidel keeps its water consumption well below the industry average. In our factories with ‘water reuse’ plants, consumption values are at the minimum expected by the most advanced technologies. The Waste Water Reuse plant at the Porcari (Lucca) paper mill saves around 230,000 m³ of water annually, thanks to a three-stage purification system: biological process, ultra-filtration membranes, and reverse osmosis.

Waste water management

In all plants, waste water is subjected to advanced biological purification treatments to ensure compliance with the strictest environmental standards, carried out at Sofidel’s facilities or to which the facilities are connected via public sewers. Sofidel progressively reduces the use of substances that are potentially harmful to aquatic life through strict selection of raw materials and continuous updating to technological progress.

Rainwater reuse

At the Sofidel UK factory in Baglan (UK), an advanced rainwater harvesting and reuse system has been installed, which uses an area of 82,000 m², allowing a reduction in water withdrawal of over 47,000 m³ per year. This solution helps to optimise resources and reduce pressure on higher quality natural sources. Where the conditions are right, Sofidel intends to extend this solution.

Sofidel works with international organisations and environmental associations to promote sustainable water management, developing innovative solutions to reduce consumption and optimise production processes.

Collaborations with the local area

The protection of water resources is an activity typically conducted in cooperation with the authorities of the areas where our plants operate. This has allowed us to include production activities adapted to the availability of water in the area, with the intention of not contributing to any water stress problems and without compromising the needs of other users, taking full advantage of existing infrastructure.

Together with WWF

Since 2008, Sofidel has been working with WWF to promote responsible water management. This partnership focuses on reducing environmental impact throughout the supply chain by supporting sustainable practices and projects aimed at conserving natural resources.
