The story of Sofidel

For more than 50 years, Sofidel has been working to improve people’s daily lives, reducing their impact on the environment. A journey of achievements, challenges, and responsible choices, which continues to write the future of tissue paper.

A story of sustainable growth,
that we are still putting down on paper

It all began in Porcari, Italy, in 1966 when we opened our first plant. Since then, the path travelled by Sofidel has taken it to become global leader in the tissue paper industry, with a network in thirteen countries. Our goal has never changed: to improve the quality of the everyday lives of millions of people, working to respect the planet in everything we do.

The steps in the story of Sofidel

1960-1980

Italian roots

Emi Stefani and Giuseppe Lazzareschi founded Sofidel in Porcari in 1966. From the start, the Group chose to combine industrial innovation with social responsibility, helping to define new standards in the tissue paper sector. It is a successful model: in just a few years, Sofidel became the leader of the Italian market.

1980-2000

Europe, the brand, and loyalty

In the 1980s and 90s, the company began to expand into Europe. The Regina brand soon became a point of reference for consumers, while industrial growth accompanied an increasingly sustainability-orientated vision. In this period, Sofidel began to consolidate its international DNA, building its identity as a European Group.

2000-2010

Sustainable growth and a pioneering spirit

With the arrival of the new millennium, the international side became stronger: acquisitions, greenfield investments, and strategic partnerships transformed Sofidel into a global player. With the principle “Less is More” – fewer resources, more value - guided every decision, from production to logistics. It is a strategy that combines competitiveness, efficiency and care for the planet.

2012-2024

Growth on the US market

Sofidel entered the United States, the world’s largest market in terms of per capita consumption of tissue paper, taking its innovative approach to production processes, integrating sustainability, efficiency and advanced technologies. Every plant is designed to optimise the use of natural resources, reduce emissions and minimise environmental impact, maintaining high quality and safety standards. a production model that allowed Sofidel America to respond to the needs of a growing market.

2024-Present

Our story goes on

In 2024, two new acquisitions - a paper mill in Duluth, Minnesota, from ST Paper and the tissue division of Clearwater Paper Corporation – marking another change in scale. In 2025, the Group finalizes the acquisition of four production plants from Royal Paper. Today, the United States is one of the most strategic areas for the Group, both in industrial and commercial terms. A challenge accepted with passion, expertise and a vision that continues to look to the future.
