Reducing plastic

Constantly striving to rethink packaging and contribute to the health of the planet

Since 2013, Sofidel has been committed to transforming packaging, progressively reducing the use of conventional plastic. This path, driven by innovation, sustainability and strategic partnerships, aims to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 50% by 2030, contributing to the health of the planet and to UN Sustainable Development Goals.

2013

Start of the plastic reduction programme.

2023

Annual savings of over 12,500 tonnes of plastic.

2030

Target to halve the use of conventional plastic.

When innovation puts sustainability at the heart of everything

We invest in research and development to find innovative alternatives to conventional plastics, working with technology partners and research centres to develop cutting-edge solutions.

Replacing plastic with paper

We have introduced kraft paper packaging, a renewable and recyclable solution with a lower climate impact than traditional plastic.

Recycled and biodegradable materials

We are gradually replacing virgin plastics with recycled plastics to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible use of resources.

Awareness-raising and education

We involve partners and customers in concrete projects, such as our collaboration with Sainsbury’s to convert more than 53 million packs from polyethylene to paper.

Partnership for the environment

Together to imagine a plastic-free future

We work with leaders like WWF Italy and Ocean Conservatory to develop innovative solutions and address the environmental crisis caused by plastic. Together, we accelerate change towards a more sustainable future.

WWF Climate Business Network

Sofidel was the first Italian manufacturing company to join the international WWF Climate Business Network programme (originally known as WWF Climate Savers) since 2008. We support the transition to a low-carbon economy, in line with the Net Zero 2050 goal.

Ocean Conservancy

Sofidel is working with Ocean Conservancy to tackle plastic pollution in the oceans. The aim is to protect marine ecosystems by promoting a circular and responsible approach to reducing plastic in nature.

50%

Reduction expected by 2030

Sofidel's goal is to halve the use of conventional plastic in its packaging compared to 2013 figures.

45%

Effective plastic reduction compared to 2013

In 2024, compared to the 2013 figure, the company reduced the use of conventional plastic by more than 45%, with an estimated annual saving of more than 15,000 tonnes of plastic.

90%

Products with environmental labels

By 2024, more than 90 per cent of Sofidel products had at least one environmental label issued by an external body as a result of audits conducted by independent third parties. Among the most relevant certifications are FSC®, PEFC, EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan Label and Blauer Engel.

UN Agenda 2030

For the shared goals of sustainable development

Sofidel supports the United Nations 2030 Agenda by incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals into its strategy. With concrete actions and strategic partnerships, we address global challenges such as climate change and responsible resource management, creating a positive impact for communities and the planet.
